In 1920, Shoji Hamada went to St Ives, the United Kingdom, with Bernard Leach and set up a pottery. The exchange between Mashiko and St Ives has been fostered since then.
The two towns concluded the Friendship City Agreement in 2012. To promote further exchange, Mr. Minoru Otsuka, a benefactor from Mashiko, contributed to the Mashiko Museum Residency Program. With his contributions, the Mashiko Arts & Crafts Residence was built in March 2014.

“I hope the Mashiko Arts & Crafts Residence will be an incubator helpful for further developing the Mashiko wares, thereby making them the widly-recognized pottery among the artists all over the world”.
